General 4-H Information - Johnson County

The 4-H program is a vibrant, vital, hands-on educational program for America's youth.  4-H members learn by completing projects and activities in any area of interest to them.  This "learn by doing" educational method is sound and meets the basic needs of youth-to be challenged, to be stimulated, to be given responsibility, and to be recognized for their achievements.

4-H is fun!  Members not only belong to clubs, but may also participate in activities such as fairs, contests, camps, tours, exchanges - both national and international, and special area state-wide events.  These activities are designed to supplement club and project experiences as well as to provide a means for members to meet 4-Hers from other clubs, communities, counties and states.

Any young person, grades 3-12, is welcome to join 4-H! You must enroll through a 4-H club. Feel free to print this enrollment form and take it to your next 4-H club meeting. If you are not sure of the 4-H clubs in your area or you have questions about the 4-H program, please contact the Johnson County Extension Office at (317) 736-3724 for more information. The enrollment fee is $10.00 per person.

In Indiana, 4-H is part of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service.  Each county has a Purdue Extension office which administrates the 4-H program.  At the national level, 4-H is under the leadership of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In Johnson County, youth in grades 3 - 12 participate in organized clubs.  These members are involved in a wide range of projects and activities including: photography, crafts, leather craft, horse, sheep, beef, swine, goats, clothing, foods, home environment, 4-H camp, county fair and teen leadership.  Members can enroll in over 55 projects supervised by the 150 leaders in 35 different 4-H Johnson County clubs.  In addition, youth in grades 1 and 2 may participate in the Mini 4-H program.  Mini 4-H'ers are not required to belong to a club but work on projects at home with parental supervision.  Mini 4-H'ers can choose from 12 different projects.

As part of Johnson County's celebration of 100 years of National 4-H, a 4-H Centennial Park was built at the fairgrounds near the main entrance, around the old well house.  It has engraved brick paths, benches, a flag pole, street lights, and beautiful flowers and greenery.  If you missed getting your name on a Centennial brick, it is not too late to purchase a brick.  Order forms are available at the Extension Office.  If you are interested in a brick, please call the Extension Office at (317) 736-3724 as soon as possible.
