Comcast NBCUniversal Grant Expands Digital Skills for Adults 50+
Valparaiso, IN, February 17, 2026 -Purdue Extension Community Development in Porter County has been awarded a grant from Comcast NBCUniversal to support the launch of a mobile computer lab that will expand access to free digital skills education for adults ages 60 and older. Comcast’s grant to Purdue Extension is part of Project UP, the company’s $1 billion nationwide initiative to connect people to the internet, create digital opportunity, and build a future of unlimited possibilities.
“Comcast is proud to invest in organizations that create meaningful, lasting impact in their communities,” said Brian Rockensuess, Comcast’s Executive Director of Government and Community Affairs. “This initiative with Purdue Extension will expand digital training opportunities for Porter County seniors to build confidence in their digital literacy.”
The mobile computer lab will be used to deliver hands-on technology workshops Senior Planet, a nationally recognized digital education program offered by AARP. These interactive classes are designed specifically for older adults and focus on building confidence and practical skills for navigating today’s digital world. Topics include using email and the internet, connecting with family and friends online, digital safety, and accessing essential online services.
“Over the past year, I have been intentionally working to expand digital education opportunities for adult audiences in our community,” said Gina Avila, community development educator with Purdue Extension. “Senior Planet is one of the programs we are offering to help ensure all Hoosiers have access to the digital skills they need to build confidence and successfully navigate today’s digital world. This work is about creating opportunity, connection, and empowerment through technology.”
Purdue Extension is excited to partner with Senior Planet to bring welcoming, supportive, and engaging digital learning opportunities to older adults in Porter County. Senior Planet’s mission is to empower adults 60 and older to use technology to improve daily life while fostering social connection and reducing isolation. Programs are intentionally designed for older learners and emphasize learning in a safe, inclusive environment where participants can learn at their own pace.
“We are excited to welcome Purdue Extension to the Senior Planet licensing program. Each new partner not only expands our national reach but empowers local seniors to confidently navigate the digital world, providing access to skills that open doors to endless possibilities,” said Kristina Demery, Director of the Senior Planet licensing program.
Senior Planet workshops supported by the Mobile Computer Lab will be offered regularly at community locations, including the Porter County Public Library System and Porter County Aging and Community Services. By delivering programming in trusted and accessible community spaces, Purdue Extension aims to reduce barriers to participation and expand equitable access to technology education.
