Heading back to school this fall seems very uncertain, but there’s no reason that the quality of education of our youth need to be sacrificed. This summer, I’ve worked very hard to create a Harvest of the Month curriculum to deliver in our elementary schools. Each month, I will visit (either in person or virtually) classes that have signed up to learn about an agricultural product that is harvested in Indiana during that month!
Ideally, in-person lessons that feature taste tests, science, math and reading lessons will be offered. Virtual options are being developed, however, so that students can complete the activities through watching a recorded lesson as well. I’m very hopeful that we will be able to do some form of in-person lessons so that students can try a variety of fruits and veggies that may expand their food tastes. Each month, students will watch videos that explain how the harvest of the featured product works. We’ll discuss what is happening and how much work goes into that product from the time it is planted to the time when it arrives to their classroom.
The first product we’ll feature is Watermelons! Grown in abundance in Indiana, watermelons are a very interesting fruit that is a quintessential summertime snack. Through the Harvest of the Month lessons, we’ll learn about different varieties of watermelon, when they’re ripe, what vitamins they contain and a few fun activities along the way! September will feature Apples, followed by Pumpkins in October.
My main objective is to provide a way for students in Orange County to connect with the local produce around them, understand how it’s harvested and why it’s good for you!
