Annual 8th Grade Raft Trip

August 28, 2019
2017 Raft Trip

Vigo County 4-Hers in the 8th grade are invited to attend the 19th annual Sullivan County Soil & Water Conservation District’s Wabash River Expedition on Thursday, September 26th.  This is an all day trip, beginning at the boat dock in Hutsonville, IL and ending at the Merom Bluff Park.  During the raft trip, you will compete with other rafts for prizes by identifying plants and wildlife along the trip.  We will stop for lunch, where you will also participate in educational activities.

You will need to bring your own brown bag lunch and drink, in a disposable container.  Please dress in clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty as well as old tennis shoes.  No boots, flip flops, etc. are allowed on the rafts.  Jeans or ¾ pants are highly suggested. It’s best to dress in layers; it’s usually chilly in the morning, but warms up as the day goes on.  No sunscreen or bug repellent is allowed on the raft, please apply before the trip.

You will be responsible for your transportation to and from this trip. We will have a limited amount of space in my vehicle to take some rafters. The trip begins at 8:45 AM at the Hutsonville, IL boat launch and concludes at 3:30 PM at the Merom Bluff Park. It is your responsibility to get out of school for the day.  We will send a letter explaining that this is an educational opportunity, but we cannot guarantee that it will be an excused absence. Vigo County 4-H will cover the cost of the trip and a t-shirt will be included. Depending on the number of members we get signed up we will be looking for chaperones for this trip.  If you are interested in chaperoning, please let me know when you sign your child up.

The Sullivan County Soil & Water Conservation District’s staff will be holding a mandatory meeting and 30 minute demonstration on September 10th at 6:00 pm for anyone participating in the 4-H Meeting Room at the Fairgrounds. Any parent/volunteer that is interested in helping with this event is encouraged to attend as well. Required waivers and maps will be available at the meeting.

If you are interested in going on the trip, we need your reservation by Friday, August 30. You may reserve your spot by calling the Extension Office at 812-462-3371 or emailing the following information to  Please also let the staff know your t-shirt size, if you can attend the training on September 10th, and if your parent is interested in chaperoning.
